  I don't believe that's true.  I'm the only one on my network running 7.0
right now, so I went upstairs and put just the laser driver on the other
Macs running there.  I didn't touch Print Monitor, and haven't heard of
any problems...

  A.  If you look closely under 7.0 and view by Icon, you should see that
the font file without the fontsize after it also has a different icon; one
with a letter 'A' and two smaller shadows behind it.  This is a TrueType
font.  This is all you need to display that font on your system.  The
others are traditional bitmap fonts.  You can still use those under system
7 if you wish.  The only advantage is if you have a document created under
system 6.0.x, and it looks slightly different with just the TT font.
Putting the bitmap font that you used in the document into the system
should cause the document to appear as it did originally...

  B.  Are you sure you're using the TT init?  Perhaps word isn't
compatible with TT under 6.0.x...

  These aren't phenomena.

  i.  System 7 uses an invisible folder to keep track of what files you
leave on the desktop.  So that you don't lose these files if you switch to
6.0.x, it makes that folder visible...

  ii. MultiFinder is the >only< finder you have under 7.  Just because
you're running that doesn't mean your Mac will start under Multifinder
under 6.0.x...

Subject: Sys 7 and accelerators -- Floppy Formats


  I finally got around to >trying< System 7 on my Plus this weekend.  The
only reason I was wary of trying it is that I've got a Novy 16 Mhz '020
accelerator in it, and had heard horror stories of people with different
accelerators not working with the new system.

  It worked great!  The Novy configuration software doesn't work, so I
can't change any of the settings, but the system in general works without
a hitch!


  Back on the subject of formatting floppies under system 7, there's an
Apple tech note that talks about the new DI package.  it states that bad
blocks will be spared on a hard drive, and up to a certain percentage of
bad blocks on a 1.4 meg floppy will be spared.  According to this note,
800k floppies do not get any sparing with the new package.

  Last friday I had an 800k disk (Install 3 from a Sys 7 personal upgrade
kit, no less) that had gone bad.  I went to reformat it in a Mac running
Sys 7 and got the "Re-verifying format" message.  The disk came out with
about 750k available, and 45k in use...

  Guess that tech note lied.

I've found an interesting "feature"/bug in Sys. 7 (I think)

When I'm on the desktop, with no windows open, I can select menu items
from the Views menu EVEN THOUGH THE CHOICES ARE DIMMED!

Yes, I can get all my icons to scrunch up in the upper right corner of the
screen when using the list views, and use cute little small icons for all
my desktop items.
.
I'm using the AutoMenus INIT (version 5.0) and I suspect this may be the
cause.  Everything functions normally, and I even get an info bar at the
top of the screen!!
.
Anybody else experience anything like this???

Interestingly enough, I just got the HyperCard 2.1 update from Claris.  It ships
on two Claris labeled disks, but the Get Info box on the HyperCard program says
"(c) 1987-91 Apple Computer, Inc."

I guess that means it is 'spun in', no? :-)

Besides, I was referring to the trash WINDOW, not the icon.  In addition to
the window opening in a different place, it also automatically sizes itself
so that it is no larger than it has to be to display its contents.

Yes.  TrueType fonts are outline fonts, much like PostScript.  But rather than
using a printer-resident interpreter (PostScript), TT fonts use a
system-resident
interpreter (kind of like ATM).

Not exactly true.  The bitmap IS used for printing on non PostScript printers
if no other font is available.  It is resized by the computer and can look
pretty
miserable on paper.

Did anyone read Cringley in last week's (6/24) InfoWorld?  There is one sentence
that bothers me - a lot! "How about a version of Mac Excel 3.0 that doesn't
spontaneously lose itself under System 7.0."  I wonder if this is the same sort
of "switch between 6.0.x and 7.0 on the same disk and lose files" problem I
had recently, or if this is something specific to Excel 3.0 and System 7?

To do what you wanted to do you need Allshare from Everyware Inc, it is a a
CDEV that will give 6.0.5 limited Filesharing capability so that you could
access the BBS from your IIci.

Even with heap sizes greater than that we continued to have major problems.

SYSTEM7 is an internationally distributed Echomail conference.
It is carried on the Fidonet Zone 1 Backbone, and thus Fidonet policies
regarding echomail apply to the administration of this echo.  SYSTEM7

Well if anyone can come up with the low memory global maps for System 7, there
is a possibility that Finder could be killed through a global call.  I found
one for MultiFinder in System 6.0.3 a while back, but have not tried with System
7 yet... just got the System 7 installed somewhat to spec.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE LAYOUT for System 7 is in the development cycle?

selection weirdness works in several other programs as well.  So the
source is almost certainly AutoMenus.  It appears to be harmless, but who
knows???  Anyone else have any theorys?

  Your right.  If you've got a Classic, LC, or IIsi, there's no reason not
to use 6.0.7.

Since Apple sells only the system software, as they always have since 6.0.x
in kit form, first for $49, and now for $99 with 7.0, where is the
difference from previous system releases? System software prior to 6.0.x
did not have the documentation accompanying it that 6.0.x did that Apple
sold. You can still get any system software release for the price of a
download from any BBS or Service that carries it if you think you can run
it without the documentation.

I've used it since release on my IIcx and SE with Radius-16 without any

Another of the obvious misunderstandings... The Install 1 diskette has to
be created from a DiskCopy Disk.image or it will not be a bootable
diskette. Its specially made to boot into the Installer. If the Install 1
Diskette is created from downloads or any other method, it will NOT be a
bootable diskette. It contains NO Finder.

However you can easily just insert the Install 1 diskette under 6.0.x and
Install System 7.

Adding more RAM at $40 a meg Should hardly bankrupt anyone, if you can
afford the Mac, you can afford the RAM. I would suggest at least 5 megs for
the SE30, that means you would remove a bank of 256k simms and replace them
with 1meg simms.

I think the TrueType INIT is in the 7.0 package and will be installed when you
run the 7.0 Installer program. If you don't want to install 7.0 you can probably
just do a custom install and install printer drivers for StyleWriter or Personal
LaserWriter SC. They should both have the TrueType INIT since they use TrueType.
The INIT also comes with the installer programs that are included with those
two printers. You do have to run at least System 6.0.7 to use TrueType.

I finally figured out how to use file sharing and system 7.0 and System 6.0.x
together. The drive with 7.0 will be the file server. You can access that drive
from drives with 6.0.x but not the other way around. In order to do two or more
way sharing all of the drives have to be running 7.0. You need to install the
file sharing (AppleShare) software on your drives running 6.0.x in order to
do this. The drive with 7.0 will already have that software.

One, I did not do the installs but I did find the fix. 2-It was with

Hello All,

I finally got around to writing this message...  sorry for the delay. Some of
these you might know, some should be new.



When you press Command-Option-Esc the Mac asks you if you want to kill the
present
application.  Usefull when the application crashes.

You can navigate from one drive to another in the open/save dialog boxes by
pressing command-arrow key.

Of course you can use the arrow keys (without command) to navigate through the
file list, the first letter of a button is the command key equivalent for that
button (ie Command-D = Desktop).  You switch between the list and the text entry
field with Tab.

Command-click on the titel of a window shows the folder hierarchy.

Option and "About this ..." in the Apple menu, shows the "About" of the old
Finder (version 1.0 und 1.1).

Try cut & paste in the Puzzle DA.

You can change the icons of any file/folder by cutting and pasting the icon
in the "Get info" window.

If you move a file on top of the icon of an application, that application will
try to open that file.

Try finding "Middle of nowhere" in the Map control panel.

You can throw all the bitmap fonts out of the System Folder for those fonts
for which you have TrueType fonts (the ones with three "A"s are TrueType fonts).

Sounds like good advice - unless someone's running a Plus.  A plus will not
run correctly with 6.0.7, unless the user is looking for system crashes.

It's on many BBSs and online services.  It's a two-disk set called "TrueType
Disk Set".  Make sure you get the whole thing!  You'll probably have to change

It sounds like your problem is that WK isn't converting its private clipboard
when you do a context switch. This sometimes happens to me in THINK Pascal.
What I do there is I try leaving it idle for about two seconds, then selecting
whatever DA I want to select, then waiting another few seconds. Usually TP can
fix the clipboard by then. If not, if I'm under multifinder I slowly switch
to the Finder. The key word is slowly -- you have to give it a chance to convert
its private clipboard.

Quickeys does keep a separate file of 'clipboards'..  but the only way they
would be coming up would be if you had made GrabEase and PasteEase/TypeEase
macro's that are mapped to the copy and paste commands...

These are cool extensions... but I wouldn't want them to take the place of a
normal copy and paste.

If the laserwriter drivers where updated without rebooting they might have been
installed while Multifinder was running on the machine.  Trying to update files
that are open, tends to screw them up.  I'm not sure that's his problem... but
that has happened to me.

I've taken to just dragging the printer files over from the TrueType disks..
pulling the old backgrounder out of the system to the desktop... putting the
new one in.

Let me know what they say about 7 compat. Novy still has not sent their new
init (as twice promised), so this puppy is going back. Will try and scrape up
funds to buy a Gemini. Of course, an HST DS is needed, also...

The most obvious changes are in the Finder: new ways of looking for files, new
ways of listing and opening files/folders, 5 pages of keyboard shortcuts (one
can now open any file on disk while never touching the mouse unless one wants
to), etc... These changes cancel virtually all the complaints anyone ever had
about the way the Finder works.


The less noticible changes are in the new routines available to all programs
that know about them: program to program communication, "live" cut 'n' paste
(a program can "publish" a picture and a second program can "subscribe"  to
it which means that whenever the first program changes the published picture,
the second program will show the changes automatically), modem communications
can be used by any program now without extensive programming on the part of
your program's authors, True Type, which allows an ImageWriter 1 to display
4 point type legibly and any  displays size point from 1 to 32767, enhanced
support for non-American-English text editing, better sound, and scads of other
things that I forget.


The System 7 programming manual (Inside Macintosh Volume 6) is 1800 pages long
and contains 32 chapters. It is a big book and this reflects the number of
changes
that have been made to the entire Macintosh.

Hi Mark
     The first question I have is how much VM did you use.  I would tend
to use the same amount of virtual memory that I have physical RAM.
In other words I have 4 megs of physical RAM.  I would set VM at 4 megs as
well for a total of 8 megs.  I would recommend increasing the amount of
memory (physical) you have because with only 2 megs, (and System 7.0
taking up probably 1.5 megs there is very little room for applications.
Therefore only apps. wanting less than .5 megs will run in physical
memory.  I would recommend going to at least 4 megs of physical memory.
Memory is cheap.  A 1 meg SIMM can be had for $35 - $40.

I have a Total Systems Gemini (not II), and it works fine with System 7.
It does not do virtual memory at this time, but TS says they will have
that working in a few weeks. As I understood it, they are getting a
customized edition of the Virtual INIT.

We didn't have much trouble with differing LaserWriter versions, but the
7.0 drivers have cleared up some other problems. For example Canvas 2.1
had difficulty printing multi-page documents using LW 6.0x, and does just
fine using 7.0.

My only complaint is that LaserWriter 7.0 doesn't include paper sizes for
color printers. I fixed that by copying the pgsz resource from 6.0. So
far, it hasn't blown up.

  The slowness you experienced was no doubt caused by the limited memory you
possess. Do yourself a favor and buy some 1 meg simms and upgrade yourself to
5 meg. You won't be sorry or bankrupt. And you'll be able to use System 7 (even
virtual Mem) with no speed lag.
